Ophthalmic & Vision Science includes the practice of diagnostic imaging, physiological measurement & tests of psycho-physical function, electrophysiology of vision and retinopathy screening.

The Association of Ophthalmic Science Practitioners (AOSP) was formed on May 19th 2003, at a meeting held in Birmingham; the goal was to create an organization that would unify the diverse professional groups involved in imaging, scientific and technical investigation within ophthalmology, providing common educational and professional development programmes, codes of conduct and disciplinary procedures. Professional accountability is at the forefront of all healthcare professionals working in the NHS of today; AOSP is actively engaged in exploring the process by which professional registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) might be achieved for Health Care Scientists working within the discipline of Ophthalmology & Vision Science.

The Ophthalmic Imaging Association and the Ophthalmic Technicians Network support aims and objectives of the AOSP.

AOSP is one of the founding members of the Voluntary Registration Council, the vehicle that will take aspirant Health Care Science Professions through the regulatory process and ultimately registration with the Health Professions Council and actively promotes voluntary registration of its members.

AOSP has adopted the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology as the minimum level of qualification for professional membership of the association. Through the Association of Health Professions in Ophthalmology (AHPO), AOSP is commissioning the development of Honours Degree and Postgraduate educational programmes in Ophthalmic Science and is committed to developing CPD resources for its members.

AOSP promotes the highest standards practice, research and training in ophthalmic imaging, science and technology.
