On
May 19th 2003, a meeting held in Brimingham established a new organisation
that would unify the diverse professional groups involved in imaging,
scientific and technical investiagtion within ophthalmology, providing
common educational and professional development programmes, codes of conduct,
disciplinary procedures and to consider the process by which professional
registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) might be achieved
for Health Care Scientists working within the discipline of Ophthalmology.
The concept recieved overwhelming support from the delegates and professional
associations present and the Association of Ophthalmic Science Practitioners
was founded. The Ophthalmic Imaging Association and the Ophthalmic Technicians
Newtwork support aims and objectives of the AOSP.
AOSP is one of the founding members of the Voluntary Registration Council,
which is the vehicle that will take aspirant Health Care Science Professions
through the regulatory process and ultimately registration with the Health
Professions Council.
AOSP has adopted the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology
as the minimum level of qualification for its members. Through AHPO is
involved in the development of BSc and Postgraduate educational programmes
as well the AHPO Annual Continuing Education Programme.
AOSP is committed to promoting the highest standards practice in ophthalmic
imaging, science and technology.
